Gum Tree Canoe

On the Tombigbee River, so bright I was born

In a hut made of husks by the tall yellow corn

And there I first spied my Julia so true

And I rode her around in my gum tree canoe

Singing roll away roll oh the water so blue

Like a feather we’ll float in my gum tree canoe

Singing roll away roll oh the water so blue

Like a feather we’ll float in my gum tree canoe

  1. Ah this minstrel tune from nearly 200 years ago. In Columbus, MS, I lived next to the Tombigbee. Brings back so many memories.
